On September 5, 2014 kicks off the fourteenth edition of Autumn in Barbagia, an initiative designed and promoted by the Chamber of Commerce of Nuoro and the special company Aspen. Familiar theme of the event is to strengthen the identity of Sardinia during a period unconventional as the autumn. The visit of the 28 countries that open their cortes weekends, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the heart of inland Sardinia, to discover aromas, flavors and traditions, arts and crafts that are jealously guarded for centuries by countries Barbagia and that annually attract thousands of visitors, Sardinian, from the rest of Italy and abroad.

Living in Sardinia ? In addition to long-lived also even happier. The elderly who live on the island are less depressed than their peers and have an overall better mental health. And ‘ as revealed by research conducted by the University of Cagliari in collaboration with the Southampton Solent University in the UK , published in the journal Applied Research in quality of life . Scholars have analyzed 191 elderly aged between 60 and 99 years: some Sardinian selected in areas with a higher prevalence of centenarians (Ogliastra , Barbagia , the city of Sassari ) were compared with their peers from rural areas of Lombardy , being based on some tests aimed at assessing mental status less depressed and more satisfied with their lives . This is because – the study suggests – in Sardinia seniors are active as long as the physical point of view , they feel most often considered within the core of family and friends and respected by the younger generation . “The sense of well-being in relation to age increases especially in the rural areas of the island – Fastame says Clare , who led the research – where the maintenance of an adequate social status and physical activity provide better mental health adulthood . “

Saffron is a splendid spice which gives color and flavor to its dishes. It thrives abundantly on the fertile ground of Sardinia, making the island a national leader in its production. Sardinia is one of the few Italian regions where the “red gold” can be found, particularly in San Gavino Monreale (Province of Sassari), where the well-known international fair is held annually. The source of this valuable product is a purple flower called "Crocus Sativus" (saffron crocus) of the Liliaceae family. The pistils are harvested only by hand for 10 to 15 days between late October and early December.
